Chapter Twenty-Three

IT FELT AS IF SHE WERE BEING CRUSHED.

Hagar could barely breathe and was certain that she would die unless she found out how to leave the wall.

How did I get in here? I must have made myself insubstantial… And now I’m returning to a solid state. I’m being crushed to death.

How to reverse the spell?

And then she was moving, painfully, she didn’t know in which direction. Hopefully not further into the wall. How thick was it anyway? And then, relief. She could breathe and was no longer being compacted. Falling at Claude’s feet in the hallway was like escaping hell, and he was the angel.

‘What did you just do?’ cried Claude.

Hagar couldn’t speak. She coughed and choked, and then cried in relief. Claude helped her up. It felt as if blood rushed into every part of her, blood that had been crushed out of her limbs and skin.

‘I was in the wall.’

‘Hell you were. I didn’t know what to do, so I did a retrieval spell.’

‘Thank you.’ She wanted to weep with gratitude. ‘I think you just saved my life.’

‘Come on,’ he said. ‘Vilka’s long gone. We should get out of here.’

Hagar held on to Claude and walked as best she could on numbed feet. Whatever she had just done, she never wanted to do it again.
